Digging for Discovery: Our Preschool Potato Harvest!
From planting to harvesting, every potato brought a new opportunity to learn, explore and grow together.
There was great excitement at Brighstone Preschool as our 3–4-year-olds harvested the potatoes they had patiently cared for over the past few months.
Watching the plants grow before carefully tipping out the pots to discover the potatoes hidden beneath the soil was a wonderful hands-on learning experience.
Growing potatoes is a simple yet meaningful way for children to explore the natural world. From planting the seed potatoes and watering them regularly to waiting for them to grow and finally harvesting the crop, every stage sparked curiosity, encouraged questions and introduced early scientific thinking.
The children loved getting their hands in the soil, searching for potatoes of all shapes and sizes, and proudly collecting their harvest. Activities like these also help develop fine and gross motor skills, teamwork, patience and an understanding of where our food comes from.
At Brighstone Preschool, we believe some of the best learning happens outdoors. Growing potatoes transforms everyday moments—watering, waiting and digging—into joyful discoveries that nurture confidence, curiosity and a lifelong appreciation of nature and healthy eating.
